There was very little traffic in the hall because the three friends had been near the end of the line leaving the cafeteria. Suddenly, Josh had his feet knocked out from under him. Snake, Ed, and Wiesel had been hiding around the corner, waiting for him and his friends to walk by. Ed and Wiesel accosted Fred and Gene and ordered them away from the premises.
Snake reached up and pulled the American Flag out of the insert that was attached to the wall. He lifted Josh up, punched him in the stomach, and hung him up on the insert by the back of his jacket. Josh was now suspended, hanging with his feet about two feet off the ground. Fred and Gene, after being chased out of the area, went to find help. A crowd of students was now beginning to assemble. There were some laughs, some jeers, and a few shouts by others, demanding that Josh be let down from the wall.
No one, however, was brave enough to interfere with the three thugs. All the while, Josh made not a sound. His face was expressionless.
He just hung there, looking out on the crowd. Dwight, Nate, Jay, Tank, and Eli were approaching the crowd. They were, as was the norm, on their way to the cafeteria. The five football players walked up to the back of the crowd. They were taller than most of the other students, so they were able to see what was going on.
Dwight stared for a few seconds. He saw Josh hanging up on the wall, not saying anything. He remembered having seen him earlier that morning, praying for his friend — actually weeping on her behalf. It was too late. There were about twenty rows of students, all standing and watching.
Dwight began to plow his way through, not unlike how he might approach a group of defensive linemen. Just as he got to the front of the line, however, the janitor was already there and Snake and his thug friends were gone. Dwight stared as the janitor lifted Josh off the wall. When his feet were finally back on the ground, Josh straightened his shirt and jacket. After the janitor handed him his belt, he put it on, faced the crowd — and smiled.
It was not a smile of embarrassment. It was not a smile of regret. It was not a wicked smile that vowed revenge. It was just.
