Deputies said Porter was driving west on U Avenue and failed to yield to a northbound Grand Elk Railroad freight train. The flashing red lights and crossing arms at the railroad crossing were working at the time of the crash, according to a news release issued Friday morning by the sheriff's office.
At the scene Thursday, Sgt. Charles Stack said Porter's Chevrolet Impala crashed through a lowered crossing arm and was struck by the train. Deputies said the train's engineer told investigators he was traveling below the railroad speed limit of 40 mph at the time of the crash. Deputies said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Porter's death came less than two days after a year-old Coloma man was killed when his car was struck by an Amtrak train at a crossing in Van Buren County's Hartford Township.

It is believed he then struck one of the crossing arms as he tried to continue over the track and wasn't able to cross before the train collided with his Chevrolet Impala.
