Day one…Decent breeze and the flat water of Coronado Bay. A great combination. We made our splash in the fleet but had better downwind than upwind speed in the kts of the day. I was elated with our Tomorrow was another story…. Day two…Started in breeze of kts then faded to As did we. Our first race was a 2 but we followed with a Check out www.
Here is the response. Wish you guys had more boats out there, would love to see a VX fleet on the line. We need to build our fleet up in California. Thanks, And depending on the other boats in the class that may make perfect sense - racing very dis-similar boats as in speed doesn't necessarily produce good racing. Portsmouth rating is probably the best rating system for sporties. PHRF might work "ok" for light sportboats, but that's contingent on how it rates the boats around it and what credits boats get outside the base rating If you have a mixed class and some of the boats can plane while others can there will be NO rating system that can rate the boats fairly in that wind range.
PHRF certainly has its problems mainly the locally vs nationally administered aspect but for a rating system within a narrow band sportboat class it is fine and probably jus as good as ORC if not better. Last month we tried going with an Olympic course for our monthly race and I loved it.
Went a long way towards making differences between the sport and non-sport boats less important under PHRF. The second race saw us get flushed after the start and then realize the right was going to come in hard.
We got reeled in on the downwind by the same shift, however, we held on for the win and the race to the hoist. Overall, I really enjoyed this regatta and the incredibly close competition. A big thanks to Coronado Yacht Club for hosting a great event, Kmag from Ullman Sails for getting our sails done in time for the event and the other Viper sailors for welcoming us to the fleet.
